Abstract :Measles virus (MV) causes feverous disease exclusively in human. Despite the availability of effective vaccine, measles is still a leading cause of mortality and morbidity among children mainly in developing countries. The virus does not infect laboratory mouse, because MV do not use mouse CD150 as a cellular receptor. In our previous data, the V domain of human CD150 is necessary and sufficient for MV infection. We developed a recombinant mouse expressing chimeric CD150 in which the V domain was replaced with that of human. MV infects the mouse on the condition that type I interferon system was abolished. In the MV-infected mouse, MV was detected in lymphoid organ and the number of the T cell in spleen was reduced. Furthermore, MV causes immune suppression in the model mouse, as observed in measles patients. We believe that our measles model is useful to analyze the pathogenicity of MV in vivo.
